Don't Make These Mistakes When Building Your Audience

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

I have some knowledge I want to bring you about building an audience online. This is a little different from a tribe. But, your tribe does come from your audience.

So let’s get into it.

When you’re starting to build your audience online, there are some common mistakes people make that you should avoid. And like with everything, there will be exceptions to the rules. But let’s check them out.

  • Not Knowing Your Audience Well. You need to know who your people are, what they like, and what problems they face. This shouldn’t be guesswork — research your audience to create a detailed target customer persona.

  • Being Generic. You have to stand out from your competitors and offer something different that they don’t. Try to drill down exactly what makes you unique and emphasize this. What’s your secret sauce?

  • Poor Branding. If not done well and purposefully, your branding could be sending the wrong message. At every touchpoint where people encounter your brand, they should clearly understand its vision and values. This is more than logos and colors. This is the feeling that people get when they interact with your business.

  • Not Tracking Results. How do you know if you’re reaching your goals if you don’t track your results? Choose a few key metrics that will demonstrate through objective data whether your audience is growing the way you want it to.

  • Not Enough Content. You need a constant stream of content to inform, entertain, and engage your audience. There can never be too much and the more, the better (as long as it’s high-quality). This blog is just a very small piece of the content that I share with my people. If you are not on my email list, you are missing out. But let’s fix that. Click here and join the crew.

  • Focusing Solely on Size. Naturally, you want to grow a large audience. But many people focus solely on numbers and not on engagement, which is equally, if not more important. You don’t just want people, you want the right people.

  • One-Way Communications. You shouldn’t be broadcasting content to a passive audience to consume. Your content should engage people and get them involved with you and each other. Ask a question. Take a poll.

  • Missing in Action. Are you present often enough to respond to your audience’s needs in a timely manner? You should be checking in daily to respond to messages and comments to show that you’re responsive. When was the last time you emailed your list?

  • Too Much Promotion. Don’t over-promote. Focus on helping people solve their problems and achieve their goals; then, your products or services will sell themselves. Of course, when you are in launch mode this will shift. And while there is a lot of promotion during a launch, there should also be value-added content.

Avoid these mistakes and you’ll start to grow a highly engaged audience of loyal fans. You deserve your own hive! If you are thinking, "where do I start, join the Automated Up Society. A community of women entrepreneurs who are learning the art of email marketing and email automation."
